          Nanyuki Zone clinches both Boys and Girls trophies at the Laikipia Unity Cup 2014

          Laikipia, August 2014.  Nanyuki Zone made a clean sweep of the both the boys and girls winners trophy at the third edition of the Laikipa Unity Cup (LUC) held at Endana Secondary grounds yesterday.

          A total of 20 teams - 16 boys team and 4 girls teams - drawn from eight zones within Laikipia County gathered for the 4-day football festival between 7-10 August.   Each region was represented by their two top teams.

           

          Nanyuki Youth (Nanyuki Zone) lifted the coveted winners trophy beating Lolomarik (Timau Zone) 1-0 in an exciting final.  Earlier, Lolomarik edged out Nanyuki Sportif (Nanyuki zone) on penalties (4-3) in the semi-finals, denying the urban boys a Nanyuki derby.  Kisima Wheatlands (Timau) lost 1-0 to the eventual winners in the other semi-final.

           

          Organised by the Zeitz Foundation, under the patronage of Cameroon international footballer, Samuel Eto’o the event introduced girls football for the first time in the Laikipia Unity Cup.  Community Outreach Babes (Nanyuki  Zone)  beat Gundua Girls (Timau Zone) 3-0 to book a finals berth as Gatero Girls (Nyahururu Zone) outclassed G-United (Kinamba Zone)  2-0 in the other semi-final.  Community Outreach, playing with flair and skill outlasted Gatero Girls to win the first LUC Girls trophy since the event was conceived in 2010.

           

          The trophies for the top scorer boys was presented to Ibrahim Wako of Nanyuki Youth, 5 goals while Ruth Wambugu of Community Outreach was the girls winner, 4 goals.  The MVP award for boys was won by Geofrey Gitangi of Lolomarik whilst Mary Ndegwa of Gatero Girls was voted the Girls MVP.

           

          The culmination of the LUC this year, was the official opening of the Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Football Academy, School and Environmental Education Centre, The academy has been supported by commercial ranches and conservancies in the neighbourhood, including Segera, Ol Pejeta and Ol Jogi, as well as Laikipia Wildlife Forum, Samuel Eto’os own Foundation and Guernsey Overseas Aid.

          The LUC addresses livelihood and environmental issues affecting the Laikipia community using sports as the mobilising tool. All teams tackle sustainability issues through the Zeitz Foundation’s 4Cs framework of Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce, which focuses on biodiversity conservation, community development, cultural stewardship and social entrepreneurship.

           

          During this year’s LUC, the teams showcased their 4Cs activities through displays and the LUC Finals included environmental awareness activities such as talks, theatre and video shows.

           

          The LUC is part of the Zeitz Foundation’s Laikipia Unity Programme (LUP) and is endorsed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Mt. Kenya branch. This year’s edition was supported by the British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK), Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF) and the Nanyuki Water Company (NAWASCO). The Laikipia Unity Cup 2014 used official Kenya Premier League footballs sponsored by PUMA and the Nairobi Sports House.
