A football tournament with a difference: The Biennial Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Cup Tournament Kicks off

Laikipia, August 2014– Endana school in Laikipia is now a scene of activity and excitement as 20 football teams and their supporters from throughout the County start to arrive today for the much anticipated biennial Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Cup 2014. These 20 teams have already made it through the regional finals of the Laikipia Unity League, out playing the other 120 teams in the League, and the next 4 days will see who  walks away with the coveted Samuel Eto’o Laikipia Unity Cup.

But this is a football League with a difference. Whilst the 16 boys team and 4 girls teams,  are eager to showcase their football skills during the tournament, they are equally eager to showcase their environmental and social projects and skills. The Laikipia Unity League is unique in that 50% of points are scored through football achievements and 50% through conservation or community projects that each team has to undertake on an ongoing basis.

All teams actively participate in environmental activities prior to the tournament - rangeing from establishing tree nurseries and tree planting, to conservation agriculture, rain water harvesting, water and sanitation, community clean up campaigns and beekeeping to mention just a few - and points are awarded based on football skills, environmental interest and commitment and leadership skills.  So in addition to football, the next four days will also see the teams showcasing their social and environmental knowledge and projects. All vital in determining who is going to win the Cup.

The tournament is endorsed by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Mt. Kenya branch. This year’s edition is supported by the Zeitz Foundation, British Army Training Unit in Kenya (BATUK), Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA), Laikipia Wildlife Forum (LWF) and the Royal Foundations United for Wildlife Programme.  The tournament is  using official Kenya Premier League footballs sponsored by PUMA and the Nairobi Sports House.
