Conservation agriculture improves agricultural productivity through the sustainable utilization of natural resources of land and water in Africa’s farming systems. Conservation agriculture requires zero tillage, diversification of crops through a rotation system, use of cover crops, reducing moisture and fertility loss in soils, and zero inputs of artificial pesticides and fertilizers.

 

To date, 4 Conservation Agriculture demonstration and training plots have been established in local schools and villages and hundreds of members of the Greater Segera community have been trained in conservation agriculture techniques. Further afield in Laikipia 3 Conservation Agriculture plots have been established by teams engaged in the Laikipia Unity League and all team members have received training and ongoing support. 

 

Additional funding for Conservation Agriculture projects has been received in 2013 from Guernsey Overseas Aid and these activities will be scaled up further over the next three years throughout Laikipia.
