Environmental Education
The Zeitz Foundation Environmental Education programme is conducted in both secondary and primary schools in the greater Segera community and targets school children with the aim of creating and imparting holistic environmental management awareness at an early age. It is intended that the knowledge gained by the students in school will be used and replicated at their homes and slowly begin to transform the environment of the greater Segera community through sustainable environmental management.
The Environmental Education programme which was started in 2011 in the four neighbouring schools namely; Ereri, Ewaso Nyiro, Endana primary schools and Endana Secondary School is a tool to address key environmental issues and mitigate climate change. Environmental Education is conducted through Environmental Education Clubs (EEC), which were established in each school at the onset of the programme. Activities of the EECs help address health and sanitation, agro-forestry, food security/conservation agriculture, wildlife, energy and water conservation.
In order for the programme to be effective, the information intended for dissemination must be passed on in a way that ensures the young learners/environmentalists are engaged and interested at all times. Environmental Education is conducted through the following ways:
• Class theory lessons
• Outdoor hands-on activities/practical lessons
• Education and field visits
• Essay competitions
• Debate sessions
• Information sharing
